What the data shows

Computed with the same code as the observations under the main chart and in the API (get_insights). Moving together in time does not prove a cause.

  • Births: 108k in 1950 → 76.1k in 2025 (−29%). Peak: 135k in 1963; the latest value is 44% lower. The trend broke around 1964 and 1976: +2.69k → −3.9k → −0.24k a year.
  • Population: 6.94M in 1950 → 9.13M in 2023 (+32%). The trend broke around 1974 and 1987: +31.9k → −1.3k → +39.6k a year.
  • Internet: 0.1% in 1990 → 91.9% in 2025 (+92 pp). Thresholds: above 10% since 1998, above 50% since 2004, above 90% since 2021. Fastest growth in 2002–2007: 36.6% → 69.4%.
  • Urban share: 49.9% in 1960 → 69.7% in 2025 (+20 pp). Threshold: above 50% since 1961. The trend broke around 1980 and 1991: +0.22 → +1 → +0.11 a year.
  • GDP per person (PPP): 43,258 PPP dollars in 1990 → 63,970 PPP dollars in 2025 (+48%). The trend broke around 2007: change slowed down (+1,009 → +281 a year).
  • GDP growth: on average 1.8% in the 1980s, 2.7% in the 1990s, 1.7% in the 2000s, 1.6% in the 2010s, 0.5% in the 2020s. Lowest: −6.3% in 2020; highest: 5.3% in 2022.
  • Inflation: on average 3.8% in the 1980s, 2.1% in the 1990s, 1.9% in the 2000s, 1.9% in the 2010s, 4.5% in the 2020s. Lowest: 0.4% in 2009; highest: 8.6% in 2022.

What changed at the same time

  • The fastest decline of "Fertility (TFR)" was in 1967–1977: 2.63 → 1.62. Over the same years: births 128k → 85k; population 7.38M → 7.57M; urban share 51% → 53.5%; no data for the others in those years.
  • Over the last 10 years (2015–2025): fertility (TFR) 1.49 → 1.30; births 83.6k → 76.1k; population 8.64M (2015); internet 83.9% → 91.9%; urban share 67.6% → 69.7%; GDP per person (PPP) 60,952 PPP dollars → 63,970 PPP dollars; GDP growth 1.3% → 0.6%; inflation 0.8% → 3.6%.

How the indicators relate

  • Fertility (TFR) and internet (1990–2025, 36 years): levels are barely related (r = −0.15); year-to-year changes show no reliable link (r = 0.04).
  • Fertility (TFR) and urban share (1960–2025, 66 years): levels are strongly related, in opposite directions (r = −0.84); year-to-year changes show no reliable link (r = −0.01). This looks like a shared trend: both change over time, but not in step from year to year.
  • Fertility (TFR) and GDP per person (PPP) (1990–2025, 36 years): levels are barely related (r = −0.22); year-to-year changes show no reliable link (r = 0.08).
