What the data shows

Computed with the same code as the observations under the main chart and in the API (get_insights). Moving together in time does not prove a cause.

How the indicators changed

  • Fertility (TFR): 6.87 in 1950 → 5.61 in 2023 (−18%). Peak: 7.37 in 1980; the latest value is 24% lower. The trend broke around 1986 and 2015: +0.01 → −0.03 → −0.1 a year.
  • Births: 244k in 1950 → 951k in 2023 (×3.9). The trend broke around 1995: change sped up (+5.94k → +17.6k a year).
  • Population: 4.7M in 1950 → 23.8M in 2023 (×5.1). The trend broke around 2002: change sped up (+200k → +548k a year).
  • Internet: 0% in 1990 → 36.8% in 2024 (+37 pp). Threshold: above 10% since 2015. Fastest growth in 2016–2021: 14% → 34%.
  • Urban share: 7% in 1960 → 32.2% in 2025 (+25 pp). The trend broke around 2005: change sped up (+0.25 → +0.58 a year).
  • GDP per person (PPP): 1,891 PPP dollars in 1990 → 2,993 PPP dollars in 2025 (+58%). The trend broke around 2003: change slowed down (+45 → +21 a year).
  • GDP growth: on average 1.5% in the 1980s, 3.1% in the 1990s, 4.6% in the 2000s, 4.7% in the 2010s, 3.1% in the 2020s. Lowest: −5.6% in 1992; highest: 11.8% in 2001.
  • Inflation: on average 6.0% in the 1980s, 4.1% in the 1990s, 2.6% in the 2000s, 1.1% in the 2010s, 3.9% in the 2020s. Lowest: −14.9% in 1987; highest: 24.3% in 1994.

What changed at the same time

  • The fastest decline of "Fertility (TFR)" was in 2013–2023: 6.49 → 5.61. Over the same years: births 794k → 951k; population 17.5M → 23.8M; internet 3.5% → 36%; urban share 24.7% → 31%; GDP per person (PPP) 2,529 PPP dollars → 2,861 PPP dollars; GDP growth 3.3% → 4.7%; inflation −0.6% → 2.1%.

How the indicators relate

  • Fertility (TFR) and internet (1990–2023, 29 years): levels are strongly related, in opposite directions (r = −0.94); year-to-year changes show no reliable link (r = −0.20). This looks like a shared trend: both change over time, but not in step from year to year. Changes line up best with a 2 years shift: "Internet" moves first, then "Fertility (TFR)" (r = −0.69).
  • Fertility (TFR) and urban share (1960–2023, 64 years): levels are strongly related, in opposite directions (r = −0.85); year-to-year changes show no reliable link (r = −0.09). This looks like a shared trend: both change over time, but not in step from year to year.
  • Fertility (TFR) and GDP per person (PPP) (1990–2023, 34 years): levels are strongly related, in opposite directions (r = −0.91); year-to-year changes show no reliable link (r = −0.15). This looks like a shared trend: both change over time, but not in step from year to year.
